WHY BEST4ME?

You can't appreciate the value of something until you understand why it exists.

The personal experience that shaped Best4Me.

Our story is one of the many reasons why Best4Me came to be.

Eleven years ago, my son’s teacher called me in. He was struggling to concentrate, she said, and she believed he should be tested for ADHD.

I did not believe ADHD explained the whole picture. Still, faced with the pressure of the system, I agreed to take him to a doctor.

The consultation lasted only a few minutes. Almost immediately, I was told that my son definitely had ADHD and I was handed a prescription. When I respectfully declined, I was warned that I was being an ignorant and irresponsible parent and that, without following their instructions, my son would struggle and might never succeed.

That is the short version.

What stayed with me was not simply the diagnosis. It was how little anyone wanted to know about the child sitting in front of them.

Nobody asked what he had experienced.

Less than two years earlier, his brother - who was his hero - had been killed. Our family had moved to another country, where my son had to adapt to a new culture and environment. Then, because of circumstances beyond our control, we had to return suddenly. At seven years old, he was grieving, unsettled and trying to find his place again, only to be placed in a chaotic classroom where bullying was common.

How could those experiences not affect a child’s ability to concentrate, feel safe and engage at school?

Yet that part of his story was never explored. Nobody asked what his behaviour might be communicating. Nobody seemed interested in understanding the whole child before deciding what the answer should be.

That moment changed the direction of my life.

I made a wholehearted commitment to raise the child in front of me. Not the child the system tried to make him out to be. I began searching for better questions, practical strategies and guidance shaped around his personality, circumstances, strengths and needs.

The goal was never to prove that one approach is right for everyone. It was to discover what was right for him. At times, I was ridiculed, attacked and accused of many things. But in my heart, I knew why it did not matter. It was a hard and lonely road, but I strongly believed in where we were headed.

Nine years later, he had completed his matric curriculum at only 16 years of age. The following year, he passed every subject with distinction, earned nine international coding certificates and began doing the work he had dreamed of doing.

Our path did not involve medication. It involved patient guidance, careful observation, practical structure, healthy ways of supporting his energy and focus, and a willingness to keep adapting until we found what genuinely helped him thrive.

That was our experience, not a prescription for anyone else. But I have stopped counting how many similar accounts I have heard, and how many people felt forced to comply, or just gave up, to the detriment of everyone involved. Truthfully, I do believe medication and professional support can be valuable, and every person deserves thoughtful, qualified care. But no label, framework or intervention should replace listening, context and genuine understanding.

I often wonder how different my son’s story might have been if I had stopped asking questions and simply accepted the first explanation I was given. Fortunately, we will never know. But I am pretty sure we would not have the same wonderful testimony to share.

Best4Me grew from that experience.

It exists for people who feel unheard, overwhelmed by conflicting advice or trapped inside a one-size-fits-all answer. It is a place to understand the person behind the struggle, explore practical possibilities and find guidance that respects your circumstances, your values and the way you or your child actually work.

Your story is not finished because someone gave it a label.

With better understanding, the right support and guidance that fits the person, not merely the problem, you can begin writing a different next chapter. Or, for that matter, an entirely different book. Feel free to explore our ever-growing selection of books, guides, practical tools, personalized plans and coaching sessions. We are determined to help in any way possible.

There may be more than one way forward.

Let us help you discover the one that is Best 4 You.
